Mailing List Etiquette
|
|
Below is a standard list of proper protocol when posting and replying to messages on a mailing list. We ask that all FLRC list members honor this list. Anyone who violates the integrity of our list risks being removed permanently.
When sending messages to the FLRC mailing list, please keep the following suggestions in mind. They will help keep the group user-friendly for everyone.
-
Please include a subject line in each message.
-
When replying to another message, try to refrain from quoting entire messages. Paraphrasing or quoting selectively are both kinder to people's eyes and email boxes.
-
Be extremely careful when replying to the author of a list message. By default, the mailing list will send your reply to the entire list if you simply use the Reply command. So think before you post. Do you really want to say this to hundreds of subscribers, none of whom are exactly like you? How will others interpret your message? Reread what you wrote. Did you really say what you intended to? Once a message is sent, it cannot be retrieved. (To send a message to just the author of a message, copy and paste that person's email address into a new message to them.)
-
Flames: a "flame" is an emotionally charged posting, often directed at a particular individual or group. We will not tolerate flames. To signal humorous intent, use some sort of "smiley", such as :-). Remember that facetiousness and sarcasm can be misunderstood easily in electronic communication.
-
This list has its own character, just like any other grouping of people. The list functions best when people respect the character of the list. It is also good to respect the differences among list members and have a tolerance for our individual eccentricities. Remember, non-runners probably think we're all crazy anyway, so it shouldn't be surprising to see different levels of craziness among fellow FLRC members.
-
Stick to the topics intended for discussion on the mailing list. Topics should be limited to running or the Finger Lakes Runners Club organization.
-
To reduce unnecessary list traffic, don't send meaningless messages with no content, such as "I agree!"
-
So we all know who we're communicating with, please identify yourself. This could be your first and last name and possibly your school or place of business.
-
Attachments should not be sent to the list.
If we all follow the above guidelines, we can continue to project a positive image for the Finger Lakes Runners Club and runners in general.
Thanks!
